Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York City are working on a Longevity Genes Project. The aim of the project is to scrutinize ‘super agers’. The word –super agers might sound a bit new. It defines centenarians who are still highly active, engaged and healthy. These people show that it is possible to age healthy and gracefully.
The ‘longevity Gene Project’ is directed by Dr. Nir Barzilai, who has performed genetic studies on above 500 healthy elderly individuals aged from 95 to 112 years, including children of these super-agers.
The discovery of new longevity genes could likely help in developing innovative and advanced therapies. The aim is to develop treatments helping people to live longer and healthier in the absence of age-related diseases like Type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease.
‘Super agers’ identified for the project have remarkable characteristics. They love adventure, are curious and certain that staying active and working are essential for good health.
One of the super-agers aged 104-years-old is engaged in managing a family business. The individual is equally connected to friends around the world through the Internet.
Learning more about the attitudes of these ‘super agers’ gives pertinent information on how it is possible to live longer.
Currently, we have already steeped into an epoch where 10,000 ‘baby boomers will turn 65 years per day. This trend will persist for another 19 years.
This era that we are living is optimistically referred to as the Longevity Revolution. It is a very fact that the population demographic is changing and a parallel reshaping is occurring to the country’s communities and societies.
The tyranny or so called ‘shock of the gray’ is imposing a gray tsunami on expenses for Medicare and social security. The cost associated with an aging population requires proper planning. In this phase of the demographic paradigm of shifts, the elders play a fundamental role in providing wisdom, experience and knowledge to assure that a meaningful change is introduced.
An aging population is a highly valued population pertaining to wisdom and knowledge of society. In the age that we are living in, the definition of aging is constantly evolving as elders are increasingly optimistic and healthy at old age.
There are great hopes for a wise future.
